Fly Tying Monday, April 15th with Karl Barton

Join us for the next fly tying session at the Parsippany Library, 449 Halsey Rd, Parsippany, on Monday evening, April 15 from 6:45 to 8:45. Wet fly enthusiast Karl Barton will show us how he ties four deadly soft hackles. Tyers should bring a vise, bobbin, hackle pliers, scissors, razor blade, and whip finish tool.  For thread you will need 8/0 grey (light), 6/0 or 8/0 wine or black.

April 11th Chapter Meeting with Kristi MacDonald

Kristi holds a Ph.D. in ecology from Rutgers University, and has focused her scientific research on learning how species respond to human-caused stressors.  As a conservation scientist at RHA, she directs a team of talented fellow-scientists and practitioners to monitor, study and understand the impacts of land use and climate change on stream ecosystems.  Her program works closely with municipalities and other partners to implement green infrastructure, riparian restoration, and other best management practices to restore and protect ecosystems in the Upper Raritan River Watershed of New Jersey, USA.  Prior to joining RHA in 2015, she held positions at NJ Fish and Wildlife – Endangered and Nongame Species Program, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Hudsonia, and NY/NJ Baykeeper, and taught AP biology at a rigorous science magnet program for Newark Public Schools. Kristi has studied wildlife as close to home as the New Jersey shore and as far away as islands in the Indian Ocean while serving as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer. She co-authored and recently published the book  “Urban Biodiversity – the Natural History of the New Jersey Meadowlands.”

Come to the April chapter meeting on Thursday, April 11th at the Whippany American Legion Hall at 7:30pm. Special guest Marsha Benovengo, chair of the New Jersey State Council of TU will be there.

April Fly of the Month- Klinkhamer

A wonderfully designed fly, originated by Hans van Klinken, the Klinkhamer is a dry fly designed to hang down in the film imitating an insect that's trying to emerge. The para-post makes it visible and the different versions allow you to fish this fly very effectively during the early stage of many hatches. A great tip is to apply floatant freely to the top above the hackle of the fly but leave the rear third of the body dry, so it absorbs water and hangs even further down into the water.

Tie up six and bring them to the April 11th chapter meeting. There will be two raffles

Raritan Headwaters Stream Clean-up and Trout Fest, Saturday, April 20th

Clean-up 8:30 am-Noon

We will meet at the parking lot next to Gronsky’s Milk House,125 W Main St, High Bridge at 8:30 am to assess the situation. Coffee and donuts will be served. If the South Branch is low enough we can collect any trash in the river. If it’s too high to wade we will just clean up along the banks in High Bridge. Trout Fest 2024 Noon-4 pm

Trout Fest 2024, sponsored by South Branch Outfitters, will be the 2nd annual community celebration of spring and everything fishing in Califon, NJ. Held at the Califon Island Park, there will be a great afternoon full of casting competitions, children's events, product demonstrations, handmade vendors, and good music, beer, and food for everyone to enjoy. Hacklebarney TU Chapter will have a table there.
